Many trekking guides will ask you to spend a few days there before your trek; the city is, in fact, at a higher altitude than Machu Picchu.
Start your trip in Cusco in the heart of the city, the Historic Center. Dominated by an imposing Spanish-style cathedral, the central plaza is perfect for a walking tour through history. Bordered by the cathedral on one side and another church on the other, its aesthetic is breathtaking. The Sacsayhuaman archaeological site, located just outside the city, is easily accessible on foot. The Inca knowledge of architecture and construction is displayed here in a stunning way. This is an ideal spot to admire the entire city of Cusco from above. There are several ways to get there, including taxis and private vans, so if you have mobility issues or are simply tired, you can arrange transportation.
